Why Bonsai Aikoka – the specialist shop for bonsai

  • Seeds from one botanist – All seeds come from a single supplier – a botanist who puts the range together and holds all the necessary approvals. That is why you will only find permitted species and varieties with me.
  • Growing media – not just soil – Many bonsai and houseplants never touch ordinary soil. They grow in mineral media such as akadama, pumice and lava, which give the roots air and drain precisely. That is why I call them growing media – and nutrients rather than fertiliser.
  • Grain sizes that make sense – In a small pot, grain size is everything for watering and aeration. I choose sizes that suit bonsai – not tubs on the patio.
  • For northern conditions – Little light in winter, frost outside and dry air indoors. I choose species and materials that can cope with it.
  • Experience – I have been selling seeds and bonsai accessories online since 2012 – and over those years I have learned what works in northern conditions.

About the bonsai seeds

All seeds are selected with a focus on species that are suitable for shaping as bonsai right from the seed stage – and I buy them from one regular supplier. The range is continuously expanded with new species.

Indoors or outdoors?

Hardy species such as Japanese maple, ginkgo and Japanese cherry are grown outdoors and need a winter rest. Tropical and subtropical species such as tamarind and sacred fig stay indoors during the cold part of the year – winter, early spring and late autumn. In the warm season most of them benefit from being outside, where they get more light, sun and fresh air.

How long does it take?

Bonsai from seed takes patience. In the first years the plant grows freely, and the actual shaping usually begins after 2–3 years, depending on the species.

Bonsai in northern latitudes – what makes the difference

Bonsai come from very different climates than ours. That does not mean it cannot succeed here – but a few things make all the difference:

  • Light – In winter the days are short. Indoor bonsai should stand close to a bright window, ideally south-facing – or get help from a grow light.
  • Watering – Water when the top layer is starting to dry out – not by the calendar. A mineral growing medium drains well and reduces the risk of root rot.
  • Growing medium – A mix of akadama, pumice and lava gives the roots both water and air. Ordinary potting compost holds too much water in a small pot.
  • Nutrients – Feed during the growing season from spring to late summer, and hold back in winter when the tree is resting.
  • Overwintering – Outdoor species need a winter rest. The pot freezes through faster than garden soil, so protect the roots from hard frost – for example in a sheltered spot, an unheated shed or with some covering around the pot.
